We Offer A Range of PECS Workshops

Individuals who are nonverbal or have limited speech need a communication system they can start using right now. If you work in special education or have a child with a diagnosis you’ve probably heard of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It’s well-known because it’s an evidence-based practice and when implemented with fidelity, it works! PECS provides an immediately useful method for requesting things, actions and people, in a way that requires and promotes social interaction. Using the principles of applied behaviour analysis, PECS starts by teaching spontaneous requesting and as quickly as possible, moves on to responding to questions as well as commenting about things in the environment. An added attraction for preschool children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is the high proportion of children who acquire independent speech after the introduction of PECS. However, it’s never too late to start PECS; excellent progress has been made with people who were taught PECS as adults. It’s also important to note that while PECS was initially developed for young children with autism, it has been used successfully with a variety of learners of all ages who have various cognitive, physical and communication challenges.

At a PECS Training Workshop, you will learn to implement PECS – the evidence-based, AAC system of choice for people with autism worldwide.

Have you attended a PECS Level 1 workshop and would now like to extend your skill level? Our PECS Extension Series of workshops are designed to take you and your learner that bit further. The PECS in Your Curriculum workshop was recently revised and updated to reflect the demands of current UK curriculums. If you’re not sure how to increase your students’ opportunities to communicate or simply want some fresh ideas for PECS in your classroom, then this dynamic workshop is for you! During this workshop you will learn how to embed and increase communication opportunities across the entire school day, from planning your lesson right through to some of the practicalities of successful implementation in the lesson itself. The PECS to SGDs workshop will explore the rationale for transition to occur, describe procedures for analysing a learner’s current PECS skills to determine the choice and personalisation of a device and teaching its functional. The Teaching Critical Communication Skills workshop reviews nine specific skills: requesting reinforcers, requesting help, requesting a break, indicating yes and no, waiting, following directions, schedule-following and transitioning. Through lecture, demonstrations, video and participatory activities, you will acquire specific teaching strategies that are relevant for anyone who has limited communication skills, regardless of their communicative modality.

After 10 years working in the care sector, this workshop was genuinely the best delivered and informative course I’ve been on.
