Pyramid Consultant Grace Payne, MSc, BCBA, UKBA (cert) writes about an important step forward for behaviour analysts in the UK and why this matters.

The UK-Society for Behaviour Analysis (UK-SBA) promotes the ethical and effective application of behaviour analysis to a wide range of areas in the UK, including education, rehabilitation and health care, business, and the community. Their register of qualified behaviour analysis professionals is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), just like Speech and Language Therapists, Dentists and Doctors.

Why This Matters

The PSA accreditation shows that these professionals are regulated and follow strict ethical and professional guidelines, ensuring better protection for service users. For those who use behaviour analytic services, such as Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), the UK-SBA register is a source of high-quality PSA registered therapists. This ensures they are getting qualified and ethical practitioners. If any issues arise, there is a complaints process in place to handle them.

 New UK-Based Certification

Behaviour analysts in the UK now have their own certification process. This new certification, developed with UK universities, focuses on values-led, person-centred supervision. The new certification is UKBA(cert), with two further membership levels for associate practitioners, and a registration for other practicing members.

  • UKBA(cert): This is a post-graduate level certification. Practitioners have completed advanced coursework, supervised experience, and hold a master’s degree. They are included on the Professional Standards Register and must have a DBS check, insurance, and safeguarding training.
  • Associate level certification: Practitioners have completed university-level coursework and supervised experience. They must be supervised monthly by a UKBA(cert). They also need a DBS check, insurance, and safeguarding training.
  • Practising Registrant Members: These members meet the UK-SBA’s standards for safe practice. They work in behaviour analysis and must have a DBS check, insurance, and safeguarding training.

 Becoming A Certified Behaviour Analyst

If you would like to become a UKBA(cert) or register with the UKSBA you can find more information about the certification process on the UK-SBA website. Once you are ready, you’ll need to find a supervisor who has completed the relevant training, just like Pyramid Educational Consultant Grace Payne. Grace currently has capacity to supervise new behaviour practitioner so do contact her here if you would like more information.

Conclusion

The PSA accreditation and new UK-based certifications are big steps forward for the UK-SBA and behaviour analysis in the UK. These changes ensure higher professional standards and better protection for consumers. This truly is an exciting time in the UK for the field of behaviour analysis.
