January’s edition of Autism Parenting Magazine (issue 162) features a great article entitled ‘How to Use PECS’.

The article is written by Emily Davidson, mother of Lexi (11) and describes their journey with PECS, the Picture Exchange Communication System. “Back when Lex was four, besides two generic words that she knew in sign language, our day-to-day life was constant guesswork when it came to figuring out what she wanted from us. Now, six years later, Lex carries around a PECS Communication book that contains over 30 different icons that she can pull out at a moment’s notice to show the world around her what she needs.”

Lex is clearly and purposefully communicating whatever, and with whomever, she wishes. For her mother, this is nothing short of miraculous.
