Parents / family members and professionals attend the same training and each workshop is generally made up of a mixture of speech therapists, parents, teachers and more.
Every delegate receives a PECS Training Manual, a full colour handout with an integrated activity packet, a practise bag, PECS reminder stickers and a certificate. Within 3 months of attending a PECS training every delegate is offered the opportunity to attend a free PECS Q & A session where they can ask questions, request a demo or to re-watch one of the training videos.
Read about one parent’s experience of attending PECS training on the Autism Page website.
At the workshop you will learn a brief history of PECS, before moving on to looking at the six phases. Parents leave the training able to teach their child how to spontaneously request items and to be able to distinguish between different pictures. Parents also learn about sentence structure, how to use attributes such as colour, size and shape for expanding vocabulary, how to teach their child to respond to questions, and how to make comments about the world around them.
Parents attend at the special rate of £190 online or £210 face to face. There are grants and funding available if needed. Take a look at the funding resources page to see what organisations are able to help.
All professional workshop bookings must be made online. Parents / family members are unable to register online, please download the booking form complete it (no printer required!) and email to pyramiduk@pecs.com.
What I love about PECS is it does not require complex or expensive materials and can easily be used at home. PECS was ideal for our boys and our family. The boys were very quickly communicating their needs and wants with all family members. Another thing I absolutely love about PECS is that almost anyone can implement it, with training and guidance.
Can you imagine going 4-5 years without being able to communicate without screaming or self-abusive behaviours? Well, my baby did. And when we found The Picture Exchange Communication System Steven began to be able to ask for wanted items and activities. He began to be able to feel heard. At 25 years old, I can say he’s still communicating more and more effectively every single day!
