When working with just one, or even several children with communication difficulties in a mainstream classroom it can feel impossible to know when or how to differentiate the curriculum to their individual learning needs and styles. You may have heard of the Picture Exchange Communication System® (PECS®) or know that it is included within a learners Education Health and Care Plan. Perhaps another professional has recommended PECS, or a learner transitioned into your classroom with a PECS book, and you just don’t know where to start.

To help educators in this situation the Picture Exchange Communication in Mainstream Education Talk will first provide information on what PECS is, provide evidence around PECS myths and misconceptions and give you the tools to determine if your learner is a candidate for PECS. The talk moves on to the practical implementation of PECS, covering time management for preparation of materials and in lessons, how to create communication across the day and organisation of key information.

Learners of all abilities can succeed in mainstream education provided the staff team have the right skills. Join us to increase your knowledge and application of PECS to help the learners in your environment.
